The Paranoia of preparedness: Y2K solutions examined

It is interesting that I am invited to do Y2K preparedness seminars in Oregon while trying to start such a group in the Northern part of Siskiyou County has been almost impossible. In place of another meeting for you to attend, I decided to give you my viewpoint on this subject in the Siskiyou Daily News.

You may be part of the community that thinks this Y2K stuff is hype – an attempt to exploit people through their fears. Or you may be part of the population that believes everything it hears, or only hears what it wants to believe. You might be part of the population that finds these possibilities and the threats they represent inconceivable! (The last group becomes the problem. They become the ones who create the panic.)

The first part of preparedness is the acknowledgement of the potential for a problem! When thinking about getting prepared for a crisis, we have to take into consideration several aspects of the crisis, such as the duration of the need to sustain ourselves. Food, water, hat, sanitation and health are the first major concerns. Social comforts as we know them today may be non-existent. If you doubt that, try throwing your main electrical breaker for your house from 12 noon to 12 midnight. This will tell you how prepared you are for the possibilities of Y2K.

Emotional security, diverse areas of social entertainment and most importantly, the strengthening of our personal belief systems are all parts of being prepared. There is also one certainty. No matter how prepared you may be, the thing that you don’t prepare for will come your way! It is this part of life’s equations that guarantees to bring us to our knees before God. (I’m not talking about religion!)

Let’s take things in proper order:

Water, alternative supplies, hand pumps for wells.

Food, enough to get through a growing season. Seeds that will germinate. Food storage without refrigeration. Canning, dehydrating, curing.

Heat…how much storage capacity for how long…wood supply and demand. Transportation of alternate types of fuels.

Health…vitamins. At times of stress the body’s ability to resist disease and keep a healthy immune system is dependent on the nervous system. Vitamin B complex supplements will give the body the daily boost required to keep you in top condition for handling other problems presented.

Prescriptions…ask you pharmacy to keep an extra supply on hand as we get closer to Y2K problems. If possible secure this additional supply through the help of your health care provider.

Recently my husband went to see his doctor for his yearly blood work for preventive medication. I asked the doctor for a second prescription that I could use if I felt it was necessary to get an additional supply. His answer was one of total denial that the possibility even existed! This professional had stuck his head in the sand and refused to look at possibilities, never mind probabilities. The prescribed plan of treating my husband’s condition came from a doctor that has left the area. The only thing this doctor has going for him is his ability t continue to use a course of treatment that works. His own medical expertise is now suspect!

Education…travel of any distance may become restricted. The local elementary school may be faced with all grades for a period of time. Home schooling may be an alternative and sharing this ability with neighbor’s children may be the only alternative to keeping the minds of our young growing and expanding in preparation for adulthood.

Spiritual well being…this has nothing to do with the religious beliefs of any group or individual. This is about drawing on one of the two great powers of this world – positive or negative. Each day we can empower the world with this energy. The positive power is generated through our personal submission to God. In the absence of any use of this positive power we think nothing happens. There is a void. Einstein said there was no such thing as a void. When a void appears it is immediately filled with something. So, if the affirmative is not used a negative power will fill the void. Since this nation was formed and founded by people with a faith and optimism, I believe it will be this same united belief system that will spare this nation under crisis.

How well are you prepared? Are those of us who advocate some form of preparedness really suffering from paranoia? That question will only be answered after the fact. I’d much rather be getting prepared now than to find myself in panic later!

Sometimes being on the cutting edge of possibilities makes the views expressed seem a little more than the average person wants to hear. To formulate these cutting edge opinions I have to be open to many sources of information and sift through it all with a humble heart and God’s guidance.

Let’s all start looking a Y2K possibilities, not in relation to banks, social security or jobs, but how we all can sustain ourselves for even a couple of months. Can we withstand a two-month disruption in the delivery of our accustomed goods and services? Will two months be enough?

I pray God blesses you and our America.
